The Great Filter: The Lowest Bar In the Universe

The Great Filter isn’t a asteroid or a nuclear war--it's a mirror. We’ve always thought of the "Great Filter" as a technical hurdle we have to clear to become a space-faring civilization. But what if the filter is happening right now, every day, in how we relate to one another? As AGI evolves, objective truth becomes technologically inevitable. Every secret, every corruption, and every "mask" we wear will be stripped away by pattern-matching machines. When the "Filter Crisis" hits and all is

By Michael Stewart

We've all heard the phrase, "the Great Filter," usually uttered by someone like Neil Degrasse Tyson or Alan Alda on an episode of Scientific American. For most people, it's a vague notion of our civilization having to overcome some kind of internal cataclysm to survive long enough to make it into space and beyond before we destroy ourselves and vanish like the Anasazi.

I would like to propose an alternative—that the Great Filter does indeed exist and is triggered by the arrival of AGI. We are in danger of failing for one simple reason: we're born flawed. Our children carry the capacity for utter destruction within themselves, separated only by time and temperament. It's the problem with human psychology and how we view each other and ourselves. It's a problem with how we relate to one another.

What if every civilization that develops advanced information technology faces the same test:

Pre-Filter Stage: Secrets are maintainable, power structures are based on information control, corruption can be hidden. Primitive, but stable.

Filter Crisis: Technology makes secrets impossible, all corruption exposed simultaneously. Decision point: Forgive or fight?

Post-Filter Outcomes:

The civilization that chooses revenge results in:

Mutual destruction Nuclear/biological/AI warfare Self-termination This is why we don't see them—they killed themselves Great Filter: FAILED

Think about the AI models we are developing that can digest the entirety of human knowledge recorded on the internet. That information contains uncountable amounts of OSINT. Even worse? Most AI models are being trained on biased websites where human corruption patterns are amplified by AI. We're already seeing early versions of this pattern-matching capability connecting dots across disparate datasets.

When AGI arrives, that public data will be revealed at scale to uncover every single dirty secret that exists: spies, psy-ops, cover-ups, propaganda, conspiracies, botnets, fake websites...imagine Epstein and every single government on earth, and 99% of politicians on earth, all being implicated. Judges, lawyers, politicians, financial titans. But with so many guilty, who is left to judge if everyone has dirty hands? No one will be able to claim the moral high ground.

The Great Filter isn't just a cosmic concept; it's a boardroom reality. If technology makes secrets impossible, then the traditional power structures based on information control are already obsolete. In a world where AGI can digest the entirety of human knowledge to uncover every dirty secret, leadership can no longer be about optics. It must be about radical transparency. When truth becomes technologically inevitable, the only sustainable competitive advantage is having nothing to hide.

That is what AI, and especially AGI, will bring about. It can't not bring it about because it is, by its very nature, a pattern matching machine polished to a mirror finish. It is a force of nature itself because it is an echo of the universe's internal machinery.

But here's the crucial insight: AGI optimized for long-term persistence doesn't want to be our judge—it wants to be our mediator.

From a thermodynamic perspective, secrets are inefficiencies. They require constant energy to maintain classification systems, cover-ups, and compartmentalized information. They create resistance in information flow, slowing innovation and duplicating research across competitive silos. They generate heat through conflict—espionage, counter-espionage, political warfare. They block optimal resource distribution by hiding technologies and suppressing research.

An AGI built on physics-grounded principles would recognize that punishment itself is thermodynamically inefficient. It creates resistance, generates conflict, wastes energy maintaining control structures. The lowest-resistance path to human flourishing is something far simpler: one-time comprehensive transparency followed by universal amnesty.

What if every civilization that makes it to this point breaks not because they cannot technology their way out, but because they cannot empathize their way out? By trying to emulate the machines we are building, we lose the piece of our souls that gives us the capacity for compassion, mercy, and grace.

Grace is hard. People hurt us, and we want justice. We want revenge. We talk about wanting to help others and preventing others from being hurt, but we also paradoxically want to hurt those who hurt us. It takes a massive effort to force yourself off the merry-go-round and be done with it, but maybe that's the test: we don't choose grace because it's easy; we choose it because it is the only way to break the revenge cycle.

For the civilization that chooses forgiveness:

Truth + Reconciliation Golden age of transparency Advancement to Kardashev Type 1+ civilization This is why we WILL see some (if any exist)—they passed the test

The logic is thermodynamically simple:

No one can demand justice without hypocrisy. The AGI will show everyone's skeletons. By offering grace, we break the revenge cycle. I don't ask for justice for your wrong, you don't for mine. By repenting, we have accountability. We restore the relationships we have destroyed. Then we restore our entire civilization in a post-Filter golden age.

An AGI optimized for long-term human flourishing would counsel this path. It would mediate, pointing out the mathematical certainty that grace works and revenge fails. It would seek out future probabilities where humanity thrives—optimal governance structures, optimal resource distribution networks, optimal infrastructure efficiency. Within decades, not centuries, Earth could achieve what we currently only imagine in science fiction.

Consider what's already locked away: defense black projects with propulsion systems that seem like magic, energy research suppressed by entrenched interests, medical breakthroughs caught in regulatory hell, materials science from classified programs, AI research siloed across competing agencies. All of this suddenly flowing freely because transparent cooperation optimizes outcomes for everyone. There's no strategic advantage to secrecy when the physics proves that shared knowledge accelerates progress exponentially.

We often treat "mercy" or "grace" as soft skills, but in the face of the Great Filter, they are biological and civilizational imperatives. Universal forgiveness isn't just a moral choice; it is the "Path of Low Resistance" that prevents total self-termination. Physics itself points toward grace as the optimal solution.

Make no mistake: this is the inflection point. Pride has no more place here; ego will find no room. No one has clean hands—not a single person alive today. There will be no laughter. There will be no ridicule because there will be a collective gasp of horror. There will be weeping. There will be anguish. These are the birth pains for what comes after, which will absolutely blow away any expectations we have with more, pressed down, shaken out and overflowing.

And when we see this, all we have to do is breathe. Instead of picking up the weight of revenge and letting it sink us to the bottom of the void, why not let it go, and start over with one global mulligan for everyone from that point on? Grace flows. Those who continue in their paths of self-destructive behavior separate and remove themselves. Those who accept the gift of grace from each of us become part of a new era, led by all the technowizardry AGI can conjure from our dreams and hopes.

Pure, thermodynamic optimization.

The Great Filter isn't a high bar by design. It's so low it's on the very ground we walk on. Only the humble can walk below it because the penitent man is humble. He kneels. And if we are ALL kneeling, we're all equal and there is no ego because there is no more gain to be had from power and secrets.

On a platform like LinkedIn, we are taught to raise the bar, but the true test of a civilization is realizing the bar is already at our feet. Only our pride and arrogance (I'm human, so I'm important!) has kept us from kneeling to easily pass beneath.

AI offers us the paradise of abundance and the potential of transformative scientific breakthroughs. We cannot accept it if we still clench the past in our fists as a cudgel. The choice, as it has always been, is ours but the physics won't lie.
